Tapio Wirkkala (1915-85) was one of the greatest designers of the twentieth century. The glass designs he produced in the late 1940s and early 1950s especially are some of the finest examples of modernist design to be found anywhere and not just in Finland which was pioneering in the style. Inspired by nature, many of his pieces make reference to organic natural forms or to ice from the Finnish landscape. He first came to prominence at the Milan Triannale in 1951 where he won three Grand Prix in glass, wood and painting. As well as designing in glass and wood he produced works in silver and also designed jewellery and ceramics. His work is held in museums and collections worldwide.
