Robert Welch (1929-2000) was a leading English designer and silversmith. He studied silversmithing in the 1940s before completing his studies at the Royal College of Art in 1952. He adopted a modernist style after seeing the work of Danish silver modernist designers like Henning Koppel in the 1950s. He subsequently spent some time working in Sweden and Norway. On his return he set up a studio in Chipping Camden in the Cotswolds, a small town that had once been a design centre for the earlier Arts and Crafts movement, notably around C R Ashbee. There he spent his career producing designs in metal for many factories and is best known for his cutlery designs. He is one of the leading figures in English modernist design. His work is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York and in other museums worldwide.
