Robert Welch (1929-2000) was a leading English silversmith and metalware industrial designer. After studying at Malvern College of Art in the late 1940s and, after National service, went to the Royal College of Art in 1952. He subsequently made several visits to Stockholm. While there, influenced by the designs of Theodor Olsen, he was much taken by the simple but stylish functionalism of Scandinavian design which strongly influenced his work. As well as an accomplished silversmith, he was also an industrial designer producing many designs for Old Hall as its consultant designer from 1955-84. He is also well known for his wide range of cutlery designs. His work is held in many museum collections and he was awarded an MBE in 1979.
