Märta Måås-Fjetterström (1873-1941) pioneered textile design in Sweden in the early years of the Twentieth Century. She took what had previously been a peasant craft and modernised it with her many designs that are quintessentially Swedish. Her designs for rugs, tapestries and other fabrics made use of motifs from nature. Some of her rugs were used in the Nobel prize giving ceremonies. After her death in 1941 a company was set up by King Gustav V of Sweden and others to continue to produce her designs as they were so revered in her home country. Her work can be found in the Royal Palace in Stockholm and in museums worldwide including in the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
