'Swan' is a 1960s design by the acclaimed Finnish silversmith Matti Hyvarinen. This large pendant (6 x 7.2 cm) has a folded abstract design representing the Whooper Swan, the Finnish national bird. The outer edges are polished while the inner folds are unpolished silver with a slightly rough texture. The chain, which has an unusual design and is a feature of this necklace, has longer flattened links joined by small round ones. Length c 60 cm.

There is no maker's mark but this is a known Matti Hyvarinen design. The pendant bears the Swedish import control marks and a rubbed 925S indicate this is Sterling silver. The chain is stamped 835S. Very good vintage condition.

Matti Hyvärinen established his own company, Sirokoru Ltd, in 1958. With a career spanning 60 years he produced many designs and was the only Finnish designer ever to win the Diamonds International Awards competition. This family company continues to produce high quality silver jewellery.
